Resetting the sa password in Microsoft SQL Server

  1. Download and install Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio onto the computer running Microsoft SQL Server
    1. Download the correct version for your operating system from this link. http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=22985
    2. Once downloaded, install the application by choosing “New Installation or add features to an existing installation” then following the prompts.
  2. Connect to your SQL Server instance using Windows Authentication
    1. Select your SQL Server from the drop down list, or if it does not appear type it into the Server Name drop down list. (if you are unsure of your sql server name, it can be found by running the RMS Connection Wizard)
    2. Choose Windows Authentication from the Authentication drop down list.
    3. Click Connect

  1. Reset the sa user password.
    1. Expand the Security > Logins tree in the Left hand window
    2. Right Click the sa user and select properties
    3. Retype a new password for the sa account. Please note, if the new password is not the same as your previous password, you will need to run the RMS Connection Wizard on each workstation to enter the new password.
    4. Click OK.
